Traders to field candidate

Different trade and business organisations of the city, at a meeting here today, decided to field a trader for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. In a press release, the general secretary of the Federation of Chandigarh Traders' (FOCT), Jagdishpal Singh Kalra, said the traders had decided to field their own candidate as their problems were not being addressed. Applications from traders wanting to contest the poll would be sought through different market associations, the press release added.

Seminar on networking held

The Chandigarh Chapter of the Computer Society of India organised a seminar on "Networking and Cabling: Emerging Trends" here today. Nearly 90 professionals from different streams attended the seminar.

Draughtsmen put off dharna plan

The Chandigarh branch of the Draughtsmen's Cartographic Association, Survey of India, has postponed the dharna to be held tomorrow owing to the sudden demise of the president of the Central Government Engineering and Drawing Staff Confederation.

Sweaters distributed to students

As many as 130 sweaters were distributed to students of Lions Bal Vidya Mandir, Kumhar Colony, Sector 25, by the Lions Club, Chandigarh Central, on the occasion of the Founder's Day of Lions Club International, according to a press release.

Six beggars arrested in Sec 17

The city police arrested six beggars, including two women, under the Anti-Begging Act in Sector 17 today. The police, it is learnt, swung into action after receiving complaints of the increasing number of beggars in the city.

Man booked for assault

Jangi Ram, a resident of Sector 12, has filed a complaint with the police that he was beaten up by Neetu of PGI Colony today. The police have registered a case against Neetu.

Squash courts on PU campus sought

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has demanded construction of squash courts on the university campus. In a press statement here today, Neeraj Sharma, president of the university unit of the ABVP, lauded the PU squash team for winning a bronze in the inter-college squash racquet tournament "despite lack of facilities".
