  Tie-break, heart-break for Anand
Vishwanathan Anand (India) surrendered meekly to Anatoly Karpov (Russia) in the World Chess Championship final tie-break series yesterday at Lausanne. Anand lost 0-2 in the first set of tie-breakers of the 25-minute games. Anand lost the first game with black pieces in 62 moves and lost the second in only 32 moves.
  Sensational photo-finish victory for South Africa
South Africa defeated New Zealand by two runs off the last ball of their World Series match after equalling the record for the highest limited-overs total ever amassed at the Gabba. In a thrilling finish, Lance Klusener held a difficult running catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary to deny a spirited New Zealand.

Zimbabwe dance to Murali's tune
Off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan took five for 23 to force Zimbabwe to follow on in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Kandy yesterday. Zimbabwe were bundled out for 140 on the third day. This was in reply to Sri Lanka's massive first innings total of 469 for nine declared.
Michel equaliser helps Germany clinch Test series
India and Germany thrashed out a 1-1 draw in the third Test of the four-match hockey series at the Guru Nanak Dev University turf in Amritsar yesterday. Germany had Bjorn Michel to thank who struck just before the half time hooter to equalise after India had gone up in the 24th minute through a goal by Rajiv Mishra playing his first match of the series.

India start as favourites
India look to be favourites in the first match of the three-nation Coca Cola Independence Cup tournament to be played today. India play Pakistan who are without the services of three of their key players -- Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Moin Khan.
Sethi, Bhaskar in final
Geet Sethi took his appointed place in the final of the 64th National Billiards Championships even as Ashok Shandilya was shown the exit by unfancied B Bhaskar of Karnataka. Shandilya lost hopes Bhaskar secured a big break of 165 in his 19th visit.
