Saleem qualifies despite defeat

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, January 13: The National Snooker Championships, currently being played at the Calcutta Club and the Bengal Rowing Club, saw a few assuring themselves of pre-quarter-final berths today. K Venkatesh of Railways received a walk-over from Rupesh Shah of Gujarat in Group D. Shah, a very talented but temperamental player, did not turn up for the meet and it is rumoured that he preferred to participate in a kite-flying competition instead.

Tamil Nadu's S A Saleem too made it to the round of 16 in spite of losing to Mohammad Asim of West Bengal today. The local player won the first two frames 79-10, 82-60 only to lose the next two 17-85, 36-64. Asim won the fifth 88-21, lost the sixth 43-56, before winning the thrilling decider 64-37. Title contender Yasin Merchant, BVS Murthy and Alok Kumar too made the grade.
