  Mamata denies breaking off talks with BJP
Former Congress MP Mamata Banerjee has put paid to rumours that talks between her party, the Trinamul Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have reached a dead-end. Leaders of both the parties are still confident of working out an electoral tie-up by the weekend.
  Gujral is in my kitty, claims Laloo Yadav
Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav claims to have a secret understanding with Prime Minister I K Gujral. Yadav claimed that Gujral was already in his party, daring Gujral to contradict him. Yadav further added that he had offered his support to Gujral in the event of Gujral contesting the polls from Bihar.

Rao in focus as Cong gears up for poll list
The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) began its long-awaited meeting yesterday to tackle the tricky question of fixing norms for selection of candidates for the forthcoming polls. With several key members abstaining from the meeting, talks were limited to a discussion on renomination of first-timers and the issue of chargesheeted members, a list including former PM Narasimha Rao.
UF divided over seat sharing in State
The United Front's (UF) electoral strategy for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls have been thrown in disarray by its partners in Maharahtra. The Front has yet to decide on a seat-sharing arrangement in Maharashtra with its constituent parties making rival claims on seats to be contested by them.

No place for Seshan in Sena list; offered `safe' Washim seat
Shiv Sena has come out with its second list of nominees for the ensuing parliamentary elections and yet again T N Seshan's name does not figure in it. But the Sena has offered the Washim seat in Akola district to Seshan, an offer which has yet received no response.
BJP sweeps UP Council polls; SP forlorn
Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mulayam Singh Yadav will view the results of the elections to 39 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats with utter dismay. Yadav was hoping for a good share of these seats to strengthen his poll arrangements with the United Front. Yadav's calculations were, however, flayed by the BJP which won 25 of these seats with the SP bagging only 11.
