Nation jubilates on Indian victory

AGENCIES
NEW DELHI, Jan 18: President K R Narayanan today congratulated the victorious Indian cricket team for their brilliant three-wicket win over Pakistan in the Independence Cup in Dhaka.

``It is indeed a creditable victory for India and the country is proud of it,'' the President said in a message of felicitation to the team and its management.

Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral too congratulated skipper Mohammad Azharuddin and his teammates for their efforts. In a message, the Prime Minister said, ``the team showed leadership and team work in successfully chasing the world record total.''

Meanwhile, the Indian victory sparked off widespread celebrations across the country as youngsters burst crackers and lit bonfires in jubilation. In the capital, youngsters poured into the roads dancing after Hrishikesh Kanitkar struck the winning boundary.

In Calcutta, fans took to the streets defying inclement weather to celebrate the Indian team's superlative display. Carrying garlanded pictures of Saurav, Sachin and Robin, they burst crackers and lit torches despite a steady drizzle.
