Suharto accepts nomination for seventh term

ASSOCIATED PRESS
JAKARTA, January 20: Indonesian President Eduardo Suharto, Asia's longest-serving ruler, today accepted the ruling party's nomination to run for a seventh, five-year term.

Harmoko, chairman of the Golkar Party, announced Suharto's decision after meeting with the 76-year-old leader at the presidential palace. Golkar conducted a survey that showed the Indonesian people want the former Army General to stay on after 32 years in power. "I accept your decision because the result of the survey showed that majority of the people want me to continue for the next five years," Harmoko quoted Suharto as saying.
