PM must be born in India, says Singhal

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KOCHI, Jan 20: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Working President Ashok Singhal has supported the proposal mooted by certain quarters that a legislation be enacted stipulating that only those born in India should be eligible to occupy the posts of President, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the country.

``I would be happy if the next Lok Sabha enacts such a piece of legislation,'' he said while responding to a question at a press conference here yesterday about the virtual takeover of the Congress leadership by Sonia Gandhi.

Singhal pointed out that some countries already have such a legislation. He said it is significant that no Congress leader has so far talked in terms of making Sonia Gandhi the Prime Minister of the country, although there is a shrill cry to thrust the leadership of the party on her.

``Wife of the Raja cannot be the Rajarani. Sonia knows nothing about this vast country and its problems. It should be investigated how from a humble origin, she happened to be financially so well off andwhether she is the recipient of a share of the Bofors booty,'' he said. Asked whether the VHP will actively campaign for BJP in the coming Lok Sabha election, Singhal said VHP is not a political party.
