Boycott sentenced

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
GRASSE (France), JAN 20: Former England cricketing legend Geoffrey Boycott was sentenced to a three month suspended prison sentence here today for assaulting his former girlfriend in October, 1997.

The 57-year-old former opening batsman, who played 108 Tests captaining England four times and scoring 33 centuries, was found guilty of hitting Margaret Moore several times over what she claimed was a financial disagreement during a holiday on the French riviera.

Boycott, who became the first cricketer to score 100 first class centuries, was questioned by police after Miss Moore reported the incident which left her with several bruises on her face.

Boycott, who was in South Africa and not represented at the trial, was also fined 50,000 francs ($8,300 dollars).
