  UP Cong "keeps aside" Amethi seat for Sonia
The Congress is still optimistic that Sonia Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha polls. Indicative of this hope is the list of candidates for the Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, which the Congress screening committee released yesterday. The list has cleared candidates for at least 50 seats in UP but Amethi, Rae Bareli and Sultanpur do not figure in the list as these seats have apparently been reserved for Sonia.

Air-India, BA launch fare discount wars
Tourists looking to fly to the United Kingdom, United States and Europe have got a windfall, thanks to the price war between the national carrier, Air India (A-I) and British Airways (BA). Both the airlines have announced heavy discounts to travellers on these segments. BA sparked off the war by announcing a 40% discount, a move countered by A-I with a 45% discount.
PM must be born in India, says Singhal
Although some memebers of the Congress would prefer to see Sonia Gandhi occupying the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), their dreams are likely to be stillborn. At least, if the recommendations of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) are accepted. The VHP has endorsed a call from various quarters, urging the next Lok Sabha to form a legislation ensuring that only people born in India can ascend to the Prime Ministerial chair.

No more missiles for Iran: China
The world took a giant step towards attaining global peace yesterday, thanks to the Chinese government. The Chinese officials yesterday made an assurance to the United States that it has halted transfers of anti-ship cruise missiles to Iran. China has also stopped the transfer of missile upgradation technology to Iran.
EC advances counting date
The increasing clamour from political parties to prepone the counting of votes has had its desired effect on the Election Commission (EC). The EC has now revised the counting schedule so that counting will now begin on March 2. The schedule for polls in Jammu and Kashmir is, however, unaltered.
