  Hong Kong film King of Masks bags IFFI award
The awards ceremony at the 29th International Film Festival of India packed quite a few surprises yesterday. The biggest surprise was the coveted Golden Peacock award for Best Film by an Asian Director which went to Wu Tianming's King Of Masks.
  Carl Perkins dies at 65
The music world suffered a great blow on Monday when it lost one of the pioneers of rock 'n roll, Carl Perkins. Perkins, who was the inspiration for many rock legends like Elvis Presley and the Beatles, died due to complications pertaining to three strokes he had suffered last year.

Gaach, a French tribute to Ray's best man, Soumitra
For all the love and admiration we have for Satyajit Ray and his films, it is ironic that it took a woman from France to make a film about "Apu", the Master's favourite actor, Soumitra Chatterjee. A product of the Merchant-Ivory stable, Catherine Berge's Gaach (tree) had its first screening in India at the IFFI yesterday.
Agashe ready to quit FTII
The director of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Mohan Agashe, has agreed to step down from his post in a bid to end the strike called by students of the Institute. Agashe, however, said that he would step down only if Jaya Bachchan, Mani Kaul or Kumar Sahni consented to take over the FTII reins from him.

Yanni concert funds to be used for Agra
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh Government to show cause why it should not be directed to hand over part of the money collected during the Yanni concert held last year to the Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC). The funds will enable the corporation to undertake activities for preserving the city.
