  Jan Apell on Tuesday keeps Muster away
The second day of the Australian open was not a memorable one for some of the men's seeds with as many as three seeds falling by the wayside. First to go was Austria's Thomas Muster who lost in straight sets (6-4, 7-6, 7-5) to Sweden's Jan Apell. Following Muster were Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic, a 6-2 7-6 3-6 6-4 loser to Netherland's Jan Siemerink and Britain's Tim Henm,an who lost 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 to French Jerome Golmard.
  Tired Anand settles for a quick draw
Viswanathan Anand drew his fourth round match at the ongoing Hoogovens Grandmasters International chess tournament. Anand, playing black, drew his match against Jeroen Piket to take his tally to three points in four games.

Indian spikers cruise into final
Defending champions India and hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE) marched into the final of the Third Rashid International Volleyball Championship with emphatic semi-final wins. While India defeated Lebanon 15-7, 15-10, 15-10, the UAE Seniors disposed off Poland's under-19 squad 15-10, 15-9, 15-10.
Bagan hold edge over Kochi on home turf
Two of the better placed teams in the second Philips National Football League will meet in a crucial match at Calcutta today. FC Kochin with 13 points so far and Mohun Bagan currently the leaders with 14 points, are not new to each other, yet both will find it difficult to form a strategy.

BAI angles for Chinese coach
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) and Prakash Padukone Academy, Bangalore, are planning to rope in Chinese coach Hou Chia Chang to impart special training to Indian shuttlers and coaches. The BAI has apparently even requested the Chinese Badminton Federation to send Chang to India for at least five to six weeks.
Shantaram loses
India's Fide Master KV Shantaram went down fighting to International Master Mehdad of France on the opening day of the Arab Capital Ramadan Chess Tournament at Sharjah on Monday. Meanwhile, in another match, Grandmaster Elmar Mageeramov of Azerbaijan scored a facile win over a local player Saud Mohammed.
