MUMBAI, January 22: The police submitted before the Justice Gundewar Commission on Thursday that police inspector M Y Kadam of the State Reserve Police Force has been shifted to Pune for treatment at his own request.Ujjwal Nikam, senior counsel for the police, stated to the commission probing into the riots in July last year at Ramabai Nagar after Kadam ordered firing, that the absence of the officer from the proceedings on Wednesday was neither `wilful nor intentional'. He explained that Kadam reported severe chest pain on January 14 and admitted at the Nagpada police hospital. The medical officer kept Kadam under observation for the next 48 hours after which he was taken to the J J hospital on January 17 again for treatment. As Kadam hails from Pune and his family resides there, he opted to shift to the Pune hospital where he could have his family with him. Nikam further explained that Kadam was then transferred to Pune and admitted to the SRPF group medical hospital. ``He (Kadam) is still an indoor
patient at the hospital and will be discharged only after eight days. He has also been advised by the doctors treating him that a bed rest of seven more days will be required.'' said Nikam. ``Therefore I would be in a position to examine Kadam as a witness on behalf of the police only after February 4,'' Nikam said dismissing allegations of police manipulation as false and without ``any rational foundation''.
Meanwhile, a photographer was produced today before the commission who had taken pictures of the charred luxury buses parked at Pant Nagar police station four days after riots broke out at Ramabai Nagar.
