JOHANNESBURG, January 22: South Africa's controversial politician Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will not face charges for murder during the apartheid era due to lack of evidence, the acting attorney general of the Guateng province today said.``There is lack of sufficient evidence to bring charges successfully against Madikizela-Mandela,'' Kevin Attwell said in the face of a demand by the opposition leaders to prosecute her in the court of law.
``The ball is now in the court to thoroughly investigate all allegations that may link Madikizela-Mandela to the murders'', he said.
``For the attorney general to consider prosecuting Madikizela-Mandela, the reliability of the new information has to be conclusive. There has been contradictory evidence given by the witnesses during the hearing,'' he added. Winnie was accused of being responsible for murdering an Indian anti-apartheid doctor, Abubaker Asvat, a teenage activist Stompie Mokhetsi Seipei and several others. The demand to put Winnie in the dock followed herappearance before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
