Polgar stuns Anand, Piket topples Topalov

BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT
WIJK AAN ZEE, January 22: After Vladimir Kramnik in the fifth round, it was Viswanathan Anand's turn to suffer a shock defeat in the sixth round of the 60th Hoogovens Grandmasters chess tournament on Thursday. The Indian had lost his first game of the tournament but is now back into the second place after having shared the lead for one day with Kramnik. Anand has four points, while Kramnik who was held to a draw by Jan Timman has 4.5 points.

It was a day of the underdog and the Dutch players in particular as four of them held their higher rated rivals to draws while Jeroen Piket felled Vesselin Topalov. Kramnik, playing with white, pieces was held by Timman in a Pirc defence lasting 30 moves, while Karpov played an incredible sixth draw in a row and this one was with white pieces against Loek Van Wely, who is right at the bottom of the table with Valery Salov, who went down to Paul Van Der Sterren in 49 moves after Salov employed the Nimzo-Indian defence.

Piket, who has already held Salov, Anand and Adamsto draws, finally scored his first win and it came against Topalov, the third highest rated player in the field. It was Topalov's second loss in two days, having gone down to Anand in the fifth round. Friday's rest day would be most welcome for him. The fifth Dutchman in the tournament, Friso Nijboer held Alexy Shirov, the conqueror of Kramnik in fifth round, to a draw.
