Anuj nets winner for Modern

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, January 22: Anuj Gupta's lone goal took Modern School, Vasant Vihar to a win against Delhi Public School, Mathura Road and helped them top Pool G in the Limca Soccer tournament at the Modern School grounds here today.

With this victory, Modern have logged a total of six points, while DPS finished second with three points from two games. Both the teams have qualified for the 16 team knock-out league.

Later, Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan squeezed past a raw Springdales team 1-0 to top Pool H and move into the knock-out stage. Right-out Sudip Rana scored the match winner.

For Modern School, who kept out hat-trick boy Ankit Kaushik in the first half, the beginning was not too smooth, with the DPS defence doing a satisfactory job.

But that changed soon enough, the cracks appeared, and Anuj, on the right flank cashed in on his first chance, pivoted on his left foot and beat the onrushing DPS goalkeeper Pawan Puneet.

But the effects of that off-balance goal told on Anuj's left leg, and, his work done, Ankit Kaushik came in for him in the second half. Despite Ankit's legwork there was no change in the scoreline. In the dying minutes, DPS had a chance to equalise, but forward Arihant shot over the bar after a free kick from the right.

In the other match, the result was a foregone conclusion, with the experienced BVB boys up against a raw Springdales team made up almost entirely of Class Six students, all just about four feet tall. But the 1-0 result speaks for the spirited work by the younger ones, with left-out Rajeev and goalkeeper Vibhu Rehani, and the little one Omar Ali figuring on the merit list.
