Protest dharna against Periphery Act

Chandigarh, January 22: A mass protest dharna was staged here today jointly by the members of Anti-Periphery Act Action Committee and Action Committee for Development of Villages demanding regularisation of commercial as well as residential units outside village boundary.

Addressing the gathering, the speakers criticised the Punjab Government for showing its inability to relax the Periphery Act as agreed upon by Punjab Housing Minister Sarup Singh in deliberation with a deputation of the Action Committee about six months ago.

The Minister, the speakers said, had also agreed to regularise all commercial and residential units in the peripheral area by giving suitable amendment in the Periphery Act. Withdrawal of the ban order on registration of land deeds below 1,000 metres was also made in the protest dharna.

Later, a delegation met Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Lt Gen B.K.N. Chhibber (retd) and submitted a memorandum highlighting their problems being faced by them over the years.

In the memorandum, the protesters demanded all basic amenities like sewerage, water and electricity connections outside village by extending the "lal dora" of the villages.
