PM files papers on "Akali platform"
I K Gujral's candidature for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls on the support of the Akali Dal has finally come through. Gujral, yesterday, filed his nomination for the Jalandhar seat in Punjab. Gujral's nomination was, however, marred by protests from the Samajwadi Party (SP), one of the constituents of the United Front. The SP expressed angst over Gujral's decision to contest the polls on the support of the Akali Dal, a coalition partner of the Front's biggest rival, the BJP.

BJP alone in AP, signs up Vinod Khanna for Punjab

On another front, the BJP fired another salvo at Sonia Gandhi, claiming that her act in seeking the release of the Bofors papers was just an eye-wash.

UF manifesto to avoid rubbing Left the wrong way
The United Front manifesto, slated for release on January 30, is likely to be a mirror image of the Left manifesto released earlier. This implies that the UF manifesto will avoid topics like privatisation of the insurance and banking sectors. The UF manifesto is also likely to contain clauses which will be a total reversal of the economic reform process unleashed by it when in power. This is in line with the wishes of the Left parties who had even earlier voiced their opposition to the reform process.

Samata manifesto opposes ally BJP on temples issue
The BJP and its electoral partners seem to be treading increasingly divergent paths, at least over the Babri Masjid issue. Close on the heels of Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray's call for a national monument at the disputed Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya comes another blow for the BJP. This time it is the Samata Party, another BJP ally, which, in its manifesto released yesterday, deemed the Babri Masjid demolition a great tragedy and refuted suggestions of a similar solution at other disputed places.

Gulf between Iraq, UN team widens
Iraq and the United States are poised for another conflict with the failure of talks between United Nations (UN) chief weapons inspector Richard Butler and Iraqi authorities. The dialogue, over the issue of granting access to the UN arms inspection team, was initiated in the wake of Iraq's move ordering the arms inspection team to cease work. The latest stand-off has, however, evoked a strong response from the US which has even threatened to act alone in order to keep the Iraqi weapons programme in check.
