Monica sex scandal snowballs, Clinton Presidency under threat
United States president Bill Clinton is facing another threat to his presidency, following recent revelations of a new sex scandal within the White House. The latest embarassment for Clinton comes in the form of allegations of an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, a charge denied by Clinton in court earlier. Legal experts have drawn a gloomy picture for Clinton with predictions that the charges, if proved, could lead to his removal from office.
Gulf between Iraq, UN team widens
Iraq and the United States are poised for another conflict with the failure of talks between United Nations (UN) chief weapons inspector Richard Butler and Iraqi authorities. The dialogue, over the issue of granting access to the UN arms inspection team, was initiated in the wake of Iraq's move ordering the arms inspection team to cease work. The latest stand-off has, however, evoked a strong response from the US which has even threatened to act alone in order to keep the Iraqi weapons programme in check.

Netanyahu stays adamant, talks tough
With Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu not budging from his hardline stance, the talks between him and US president Bill Clinton to find a way to achieve peace in West Asia have reached a road-block. The only hope for peace now is a new proposal which calls for a phased withdrawal by Iraqi forces from at least 10% of the West Bank area under their control.
Winnie escapes murder charges
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the controversial former wife of South African leader Nelson Mandela, has been let off the hook for alleged murders during the apartheid era. An acting attorney general of the Guateng province yesterday said that Winnie won't face charges for the alleged murders of an Indian anti-apartheid doctor, Abubaker Asvat, a teenage activist Stompie Mokhetsi Seipei and several others, as there was a lack of conclusive evidence against her.

Chapel of Communism rolls out red carpet for the Pope
Pope John Paul II has landed in Cuba to begin a historic five-day visit, bringing a message of reconciliation in the long, bitter US-Cuban standoff, and of "truth and hope" for Cuba's hard-pressed people. President Fidel Castro greeted John Paul under a blazing sun at Havana's airport on Wednesday, leading the Communist nation's welcome for the pontiff who has harshly criticised communism during his 20-year papacy.
Veerappan cocks a snook at STF
Even as the Combined Special Task Force (STF) of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were combing the BR Hills region and keeping a vigil on Male Mahadeshwara Hills expecting the notorious forest brigand Veerappan for "pongal" celebrations, Veerapan, it seems, managed to give then the slip. It has now come to light that the brigand paid a quiet visit to Gopinatham, his native village on January 17.
