Frenchmen make it a wide Open
The saga of mens' seeds dropping out from the on-going Australian Open continued yesterday with two more seeds biting the dust. Third-seeded American Michael Chang was the biggest casualty losing 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) in a second round match against France's Guillaume Raoux. Also losing was 10th seed and French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten who lost 5-7 6-3 6-1 7-5 to another Frenchman Nicolas Escude.

Polgar stuns Anand, Piket topples Topalov
India's Grand Master Viswanathan Anand suffered a reverse in the sixth round of the 60th Hoogovens Grandmasters chess tournament on Thursday. Anand, who was in joint first position before this match, lost to Hungary's Judith Polgar. The loss has again relegated Anand to the second spot in the tournament.

Limited overs, unlimited acclaim for Dravid
The Indian cricket team selectors were left with egg on their faces, following the nomination of Rahul Dravid as the best Indian cricketer of the year. Dravid, who was dropped from the Indian team by the selectors, was nominated by a panel of 121 former greats with an overwhelming 62 votes going in his favour. The other contenders to the crown were Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Saurav Ganguly and Anil Kumble.

Chandana stars in SL win
Leg-spinner Upul Chandana claimed a career-best haul of 4-31 to help Sri Lanka cruise to a comfortable five-wicket win over Zimbabwe in their first one-day international played at Colombo yesterday. Sri Lanka, fielding first, restricted Zimbabwe to a modest 207. The hosts rattled up the required runs in the 46th over with skipper Ranatunga cracking an unbeaten 58.
