Martin spins Kiwis to win

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
JOHANNESBURG, January 23: New Zealand beat Sri Lanka in their under-19 World Cricket Cup match in Port Elizabeth today, holding out for a 41-run win.

With New Zealand dismissed for 180, their captain Jarrod Englefield -- top scorer with 54 -- must have rued the three run outs, two of which he was responsible for, which ripped the heart out of the middle order.

However, when New Zealand left arm spinner Bruce Martin was introduced to the attack the Sri Lankans' flow of runs suddenly dried up and they quickly found themselves in trouble. At 118 for eight they were effectively shut out of the game.

In the Plate league, Bangladesh cemented their place in the final when they beat Ireland by three wickets at Benoni. Earlier, the West Indies ensured their place in the final when they comfortably beat Scotland by five wickets at Eochville.

Brief scores: New Zealand 180 all out in 48.5 overs (J Engelfield 54, R West 25; Ratwatte 2-31, Bandara 4-20) bt Sri Lanka 139 all out in 46.5 overs (V Fernando 36; B Martin 3-12, K Mills 2-23, T Anderson 2-40).
