Weekend Retreat/ Kulwant Singh Kohli

Chatura Poojari
My work is my relaxation," says Mumbai's sheriff Kulwant Singh Kohli with true patriotic spirit. Working on a seven-day-a-week schedule, Kohli feels uneasy if he has any free time on his hands. The more time he spends working and talking to people, the more relaxed and pleased he is. His day begins around 6.45 am with a 50-minute walk in the Dadar Race Course or on the terrace of his building. Then, he disappears for two hours into his `small office' at home. A few more minutes with The Guru Granth Sahib room and then he is ready for work by 12.00 pm.

The rest of his day is divided between managing the famous chain of restaurants, Preetams, and the responsibilities of being a sheriff. However hectic the workload may be, this 64 year old is back home by 9.00 pm for dinner. "This has been a pattern for the last 30 years," reveals Kohli, "All my family members are there at the dinner table by 9.00 pm. And that's one of the reasons for my good health."

And since family comes third on his list of priorities -- the first and second being work -- his Sunday begins a little late. Sunday mornings are reserved for his grandchildren -- playing with his one-and-a-half year old grandson -- and having a serious debate on clothes and shoes with his 9-year-old granddaughter.
