  Donald inspires a South African thriller
South Africa, fired by a telling late burst from Allan Donald, snatched a six-run victory over Australia in the first match of the World Series Cup finals played yesterday at Melbourne. Defending 241 for nine on a perfect batting strip in the 50 overs day-night game, South Africa seized the last five wickets for 14 to dismiss Australia for 235 with one ball remaining.
  Thai Tamarine hands a bitter pill to Majoli
The virus affecting the seeds in the men's draw of the Australian Open has now apparently spread to the women's section. No 4 seed and reigning French Open champ Iva Majoli lost her second round match 0-6, 2-6 to unseeded Tamarine Tanasugarn. Meanwhile, the men's draw lost another seed, No 11 Alex Corretja of Spain, a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 loser against France's Cedric Pioline.

Martin spins Kiwis to win
New Zealand beat Sri Lanka in their under-19 World Cricket Cup match in Port Elizabeth yesterday. New Zealand, who made only a meagre 180 after batting first, bowled the Lankans out for only a 139 in the 47th over. For New Zealand, skipper Jarrod Englefield, who top scored with 54, and left arm spinner Bruce Martin, who took 3 wickets for 12 runs, were the heroes of yesterday's win.
Barua beats American IM
Indian Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua scored an emphatic victory over American International Master Boris Kreiman in the third round of Ubeda International underway in Spain. His win yesterday has propelled Barua to the first spot in the tournament. But for Barua, it is not lonely at the top as there seven other players sharing the top spot with him.

Determined Churchill Bros prove a point
Churchill Brothers provided the ideal boost to their president Joaquim Alemao's resolve to keep the club running, with a 2-1 (half-time 1-0) win over Goan rivals Dempo in a Philips National Football League (NFL) match at the Fatorda Stadium in Margao, Goa yesterday. The win was clinched for Churchill Brothers by man-of-the-match Kasif Jamal who shot in the winning goal seven minutes from the end.
West best East in a last over climax
The Deodhar Trophy match between West Zone and East Zone played yesterday at Chennai witnessed a thrilling victory chase by West Zone. Earlier, East Zone, batting first, had made 288 runs in their alloted 50 overs. West Zone, through big innings from Vinod Kambli and Hrishikesh Kanitkar, managed to overhaul the East total in the last over.
