Tytler's out of race for Lok Sabha polls
Congress heavyweight Jagdish Tytler's political star seems to be on the wane. Tytler, who had filed his nomination as a covering candidate from the Sadar seat, was left in the lurch yesterday when his papers were rejected. Tytler's attempts at contacting Congress leaders Sitaram Kesri and Sonia Gandhi also were in vain. Tytler, however, ruled out any possibility of his contesting the Lok Sabha polls as an independent candidate.

Low Muslim turnout at Kesri's iftaar party
The Congress' public gesture of apologising for the Babri Masjid demolition and 1984's infamous Operation Bluestar does not seem to have cut much ice with the Muslim community. This impression stems from the poor turnout at an iftaar party hosted by Congress president Sitaram Kesri in Delhi yesterday. The low Muslim presence at the party may force the Congress to go in for other measures to keep its hopes of securing the Muslim vote intact.

Another jolt for JD in Orissa
The Orissa unit of the Janata Dal suffered a big blow on Wednesday with Narasimha Mishra, the party's legislative wing leader, resigning from his post. Mishra's move came in protest against the recent outburst of Union Minister Srikanta Jena against the erstwhile Biju Patnaik government. This blow, coming on top of the recent split in the party, is bound to hamper the JD's poll preparations in Orissa.

Pranab refuses to blame only Rao for Babri
Former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, who has been denied a ticket for the Lok Sabha polls, will find some solace from Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Pranab Mukherjee statement made at a press conference in Calcutta on Wednesday. Mukherjee stated that it was wrong to pin the blame for the demolition of the Babri Masjid entirely onto Rao's shoulders. Mukherjee was, however, non-committal on the issue of Rao being denied a ticket for the polls.

Anna Joshi quits BJP over "Kalmadi culture"
The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) decision to support the candidature of former Congressman Suresh Kalmadi in Pune has irked BJP MP Anna Joshi. Joshi, in protest against the BJP's extension of aid to Kalmadi, has resigned from the BJP. Joshi will now be contesting the elections as an independent candidate.
