  Korda cartwheels into final
The giant-killing run of Slovak Karol Kucera in the Australian Open was halted in the semi-finals yesterday. Kucera, who had defeated top seed and World No 1 Pete Sampras en route to the semi-finals, lost to sixth-seeded Czech Petr Korda 6-1, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Korda now plays the winner of today's semifinal between No 9 seed Marcelo Rios of Chile and Nicolas Escude of France. Meanwhile, in the women's round, it will be top seed Martina Hingis against eight-seeded Spaniard Conchita Martinez in the finals on Saturday.
India fail to make it to final
In spite of beating arch-rivals Pakistan in their last league encounter, the Indian team failed to qualify for the finals of the under-19 cricket World Cup underway in South Africa. India scored 191 for five in 40.1 overs in reply to Pakistan's 188. This was, however, not enough for India to reach the finals as they needed to score in excess of five runs an over to qualify.

Kingston follows the Indore example: Match abandoned
The first cricket Test match between England and West Indies which began at Kingston, Jamiaca yesterday was called off after only 10.1 overs had been bowled. The umpires took the decision to halt the match due to the poor condition of the pitch, claiming that it posed a bodily threat to the batsmen. This unprecedented move came in the wake of body blows suffered by the English batsmen. In the short play possible, the English side was reduced to 17 for the loss of three wickets.
Mixed luck for Bhupathi
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi crashed out of the men's doubles of the Australian Open yesterday when they were beaten in a five-set thriller 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 by fifth seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Jacco Eltingh. Bhupathi, however, put behind his disappointment and in tandem with Caroline Vis of the Netherlands, managed to beat the Australian pair of Andrew Kratzmann and Kerry-Anne Guse 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles event.

Jeev shoots three under
India's ace golfer Jeev Milkha Singh shot a three under 69 in the opening round of the $924,000 Vines Classic golf tournament at Perth on Thursday. The field is being led by Welshman Ian Woosnam, who fought injury, heat and a strong afternoon wind, to post a six-under par 66 to claim a one stroke lead in the tournament.
Mohotas take the crash route
The Mohota sisters, top seed Swati and second seed Nisha of West Bengal, snatched defeats from winning positions, clearing the way for third seed Pallavi Shah's smooth progress after an eventful seventh round of the Premier Grip National Junior Chess Championship at the indoor stadium in Kozhikode, Kerala yesterday. Pallavi of Maharashtra, with 6.5 points, widened her lead to a full point after her 26-move win in Sicilian Scheveningen over Ashwini Kulkarni of Maharashtra.
