Mishra may be interim CBI chief
With the Supreme Court's firm no to any extension to CBI chief R C Sharma, who is to retire today, the stage is set for an "officiating" director. And it's Trinath Mishra, a 1965 batch UP cadre IPS officer, who's likely to step in. Special Director D R Karthikeyan, who is a year senior to Mishra, may lose out since the Department of Personnel (DoP) has already passed orders for his appointment as OSD in the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Black Id: 7 die in Doda police firing
Jammu and Kashmir was witness to another tragedy on Friday. Seven Muslims, including a woman and a child, were killed when a joint search party of the Army and police fired on angry villagers at Malang village in Doda district. The tragedy took place when a group of villagers attempted to hamper the combing operations. The incident, coming close on the heels of the massacre of 23 Kashmiri Pandits by militants, has cast a shadow over the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in the state.

Israel agrees to US demand on troop pullback
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to US demands for a ``double digit'' troop pullback from the West Bank on the condition that Palestinians renounce all further land transfers prior to a final peace deal, reports in the Israeli media said today. The Haaretz newspaper said Netanyahu will offer US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright this weekend an Israeli withdrawal from an additional 12 per cent of the West Bank, compared to reported earlier offers of less than 10 per cent.

France anti-aggression stand against Iraq wavers
As the United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright awaits an update on Russian diplomatic efforts to open Iraq's suspect weapons sites, France, which has so far resisted the option of armed attack against Saddam, is edging closer to supporting military action as a last resort. On the eve of yesterday's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov, Albright said that all diplomatic options had been exhausted, thus leaving force as the only means of influencing Iraq.
