Rios capitalises on Escude mistakes
Ninth seed Marcelo Rios of Chile profited from an ill-disciplined performance by Nicolas Escude yesterday to power through their Australian Open semifinal clash and reach the first Grand Slam final of his career. Rios took just 83 minutes to beat Escude 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 and book a place in Sunday's men's singles final against sixth seeded Czech Petr Korda.

SA regain advantage
South Africa tenaciously fought their way into a commanding position on the opening day of the third and final cricket Test against Australia at Adelaide yesterday. Chosing to bat after they won the toss, the Proteas forged to 269 for four by stumps, thanks to an unbeaten 70 from skipper Hansie Cronje and fifties from the openers, Gary Kirsten and Adam Bacher.

Anand keeps lead
Viswanathan Anand retained his half-point lead over the field with a quick draw with English Grandmaster Michael Adams in the 11th round of Hoogovens Grandmaster Chess tournament. The draw gives Anand 7.5 points out of 11, while his nearest rival Alexy Shirov has seven after his draw with Loek Van Wely of The Netherlands.

Extra Test for WI-England series
The cancellation of the first cricket Test match between England and West Indies at Jamaica on Thursday has forced a revision of the tour itinerary. England will now play back-to-back Tests at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad. The substitute Test will start next Thursday with the scheduled second match of the series commencing on February 13.
