Kannan stuns second-seeded Dane

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, February 4: Vijay Kannan, reserve in the Davis Cup squad, enhanced his reputation with a straight-set win over second seeded Dane Mik Ledvonova 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the ITF Junior (Under-18) tennis tournament at the DTA Courts this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Sanzaruz Zaman, the top-seeded Indian, crashed out to another Danish player, Jacob Paulsen, in a hard-fought three-setter 6-7 (3), 6-4, 3-6.

In the girls section, top-seed Uzma Khan carried Indian hopes into the semi-finals with a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 win over compatriot Sheetal Gautam.

On Thursday, the women's semi-final line-up will see three Austrians and a solitary Indian, while it will be the reverse in the boys, where there are three Indians. The lone outsider is Paulsen.

Radhika Tulpule and Trishna Williams went out in the quarter-finals. While Radhika went down tamely to Yvonne Meusburger 3-6, 2-6, Trishna Williams won the first set before falling into a slump against Marion Sohm, who won 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Zaman, playingwith heavily strapped thighs, lost the first set in a tie-breaker, but then won the second set to level.

But with the match going into three sets, injury took its toll on the Indian. Zaman sought medical attention and then with the match becoming tense, both players argued with each other over line calls. Still Zaman stayed with the Dane till 3-3 before the latter ran away with three games in a row and with the match 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3.
