  Iraq crisis: Yelstin warns of world war
In his most blunt statement so far, Russian President Boris Yeltsin has warned that the possible use of force by the United States in the Gulf could trigger a world war. Turning up the heat against the US, he accused US President Bill Clinton of acting too leisurely in the dispute over United Nations (UN) weapons inspection in Iraq.
  TV channels defy EC as DD loses revenue
Doordarshan, the state-owned television network, is running heavy losses, thanks to a directive from the Election Commission (EC) banning it from airing any programmes featuring candidates contesting the elections. Although the ruling is applicable to private channels also, it has not prevented them from airing programmes in violation of the ruling. This has ensured that while Doordarshan suffers massive losses, private channels rake in profits.

20 die as US plane clips cable car wires in Italian resort
Twenty people aboard a cable car in an Italian ski-resort were killed on Tuesday when a US military plane on a training flight cut a supporting cable, sending their gondola crashing 80 metres (260 feet) to the ground. Rescuers said the bodies of 11 men and nine women had been recovered from the wreckage of the cable car at the resort of Cavalese near Trento in the Dolomite mountains of northeastern Italy.
India demands expansion of UN Security Council
India has called for an immediate expansion of the United Nations Security Council to accommodate developing countries as its permanent members. India's permanent representative to the UN, Kamlesh Sharma, further added that developing countries should also be accorded veto powers and other powers currently available only to the existing five permanent members.

No report of survivors in Philippines crash
Rescue teams yesterday reached debris from a crashed Philippines airliner carrying 104 passangers and crew that slammed into a mountainside two days ago. They, however, relayed sad news when they claimed that there were no immediate sign of survivors.
Rebels may favour Australia's ties with British monarchy
Diehard Republicans threatened in Canberra, Australia on Wednesday to derail a historic convention debating Australia's future after it rejected the idea of electing a President by popular vote. About 20 Republican delegates formed a breakaway group saying they would walk out or even vote with those in favour of retaining ties to the British monarchy after a vote on Tuesday appeared to rule out popular Presidential elections in any new Republic.
