The abuse and torture go with the job

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Nagpur, February 5: THANKS to mediation by Nagpur University Human Rights Cell (NUHRC), a gazetted officer with the AG office is back to picking up the threads of a normal office life. The said officer has been subjected to ``two years of constant mental torture and humiliation at the hands of his senior'' ever since he was promoted.

The NUHRC has taken up the matter with Barse, DAG (Works), who has assured the cell members that she would look into the matter with a view to providing relief to the aggrieved officer.

S Guha, DAO, grade I, who has been down with complete paralysis of lower limbs, has been subject to constant mental torture, verbal humiliation and denial of basic work place amenities, allegedly by Godbole, senior DAO, since the last two years, when he (Guha) was promoted to grade I.

Speaking to The Indian Express Dr Ushasi Guha, a senior member of the cell, said a team of NUHRC visited the AG Office yesterday and caught Godbole, red handed, having a telephonic conversation with SO(WM) regarding Guha's dismissal. The cell members ``recorded the conversation, wherein Godbole used abusive and derogatory statements against Guha''.

The cell members also discovered that Guha was not provided with even the basic facilities due to a officer such as a peon, telephone, and a fan. And this in spite of the fact that The Gazette of India Extraordinary, Part II, subsection 47(1) of Section I clearly states that no benefit is to be denied to a handicapped person, due to his/her handicap.

They also ``found that Guha was issued inter-office memorandums on trifle issues, such as coming late to the office''. The cell members had a talk with Godbole, who, Dr Guha said, ``did not seem in a mood to co-operate''.

The matter was then taken up with the DAG (works). Dr Guha said the cell will follow up the matter and if the case is still not resolved, it would approach the National Human Rights Commission. However, she said if the verbal warning solved the matter, they would consider it a satisfactoryconclusion''.
