Ninth seed Sudarshan held to a draw

MUMBAI, Feb 6: In the only result that did not go according to expectations, ninth seed M Sudarshan of Mazgaon Dock was held to a draw by Hosang Tafti in the first round of the Bombay Division Selection Chess Tournament being organised by the Bombay Chess association at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen.

Top seed Dinesh Bhandarkar of LIC outwitted Santosh Narayan in 19 moves, while defending champion, second seed Ketan Boricha checkmated Anand Bansode in 34 moves.

Menon upsets Keshav

IN A big upset, Vivek Menon, theseventh seed, knocked out second seeded Keshav Narsimhan 8-5 in the quarter-finals of the boys under-12 of the Bhatija Open Tennis Tournament being played at the Khar Gymkhana here today.

There were two more upsets on a day when all the other seeded players won through easily. Agnel Gladwin, the third seed, won 9-7 against Arnav Jain, who is ranked one above in the boys under-10 section.

In the girls action, Isha Lakhani, the sixth seed defeated Ridhima Raina 8-0 in the under-16 section.

BOYS under-16 (QFs): Amit Karunakaran bt Rushang Patel 6-3, 6-3; Pratim Parekh bt Vivek Jhaveri 6-3, 7-5; Gaurav Kumar bt Ankit Doshi 6-3, 6-2; Gavryl Fernandes bt Vikrant Sane 7-5, 6-3.

Under-12 (QFs): Karan Rastogi bt Sidharth Chheda 8-2; Rohan Shewakramani bt Karan Jhaveri 8-2; C Akshaya bt R Ramnath 8-5; Vivek Menon bt Keshav Narshimhan 8-5.

Under-10 (SFs): Bhavik Selarka bt Manikala Janmali 9-3; Agnel Gladwin bt Arnav Jain 9-7.

GIRLS Under-16 (QFs): Sonal Phadke btJohann Fernandes 8-4; Isha Lakhani bt Jitisha Selarka 8-7 (7-3); Mayura Bandekar bnt Ridhima Raina 8-0; Liza Pereira bt Noopur Desai 8-0.

Under-14: Noopur Desai bt Jharna Nansi 8-3; Ronak Shah bt Saumya Kowtha 8-4; Johann Fernandes bt Krushmi Chheda 8-0; Isha Lakhani bt Medini Sharma 8-2.

Under-12 (SFs): Ronak Shah bt Tulsi Mehta 9-3; Kartiki Bhat bt GK Shweta 9-2.

Big win for Achrekar XI

VS PATIL and Achareker XI won their opening round matches of the Dadasaheb Rege and Manikrao Lotikar Trophy Cricket Tournament sponsored by Omtex and organised by Dadar Parsee Zoroastrain.

Achrekar XI scored 338 with Amit Jadhav (71), Amol Rane (37) and Praful Dhule (45) making useful contributions. For Anna Vaidya team, Mangesh Darekar took three wickets for 70 runs while Vikram Toravi scalped two.

Anna Vaidya XI could score only 184 in 45 overs. Santosh Shetty with four wickets for 44 runs, Samir Bhatankar (3-28) and Jagdish Shruti 2-32 were wreckers.

VS Patil piled up a big total of 348for 8 in 75 overs against Hodkar XI. Amod Desai, who won the Man of the Match award later, scored an unbeaten century while Ramesh Pawar (42) and Nilesh Desai (54) gave valuable support. Hadkar were bowled out for 185. Sachin Savardekar was the pick of the bowler. He claimed 5 for 38. Amit Tonavade 2-20 and Ramesh Pawar 2-54 also helped their side to win.

Cops tame Rajput

GREATER Mumbai Police (GMP) routed Rajput XI 5-0 (half-time 2-0) in BHA First Division hockey match at the Mahindra Stadium, today.

The cops shot ahead in the very first minute of play through a field goal by Sanjay Phandhre. Tushar Kamble extended the lead with another excellent effort from open play, later in the in the 33rd minute.

Rajput, totally off colour today, despite Gavin Vandrine's gallant individual efforts. With no players on the bench, a tiring Rajput proved no match for Greater Mumbai Police in the second half.

Phandhre scored his second in the 44th minute and Mahendra Jadhav (49th) and Vinod Chavan (58th)completed the rout.

BARC prevail

BARC beat Park Youngsters 3-1 (half-time 2-0) in a WIFA League IIID football match at the Cooperage, today.

P Pravin netted twice for BARC with Khakse adding another. Michael D'Souza pulled one back for Park Youngsters.

Royal FC failed to turn up against Gajjan Laxmi in a Division IIH match.
