End row over language, Lata tells Goan people

PANAJI, February 6: Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar asked Goans on Thursday night to stop fighting in the name of Konkani and Marathi. "There are more important issues facing the nation than the language which need to be addressed," she said at a stone-laying function of the proposed Marathi Bhavan project at Porvorim.

The Goa-born nightingale of Indian cinema is here with her sisters Usha, Meena and brother Hridaynath as guests of the Gomantak Marathi Academy which has sponsored the Rs three crore Marathi Bhavan project. The project is funded through public donations to preserve and strengthen Goa's Marathi language and culture. Lata also announced a donation of Rs one lakh from Dinanath Mangeshkar Trust to the proposed project for which a samiti headed by Goan industrialist Vishwasrao Chowgule has been set up. The Samiti will approach Goan public for donations through issue of donation coupons in different dominations.

Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane and Union Minister of State for Law and JusticeRamakant Khalap were also present at the function.

The famous brother-sister musical duo of Lata and Hridyanath, will be felicitated at a public function here on Friday. Supporters of the Mangeshkar family lined up streets in Goa to cheer them for their efforts to give quality music to the connoisseurs.
