Seeds saunter into last four stage

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, February 6: Vandana Agarwal faces Nonita Lall-Quereshi and Anjali Chopra will square up against Parnita Garewal in the semi-finals of the All-India˙Women's Golf Championship at the Bombay Presidency Golf˙Club Course here tomorrow.

The line-up confirmed pre-tournament billing with the top four making the grade.

In the quarter-finals, save third seed Anjali Chopra of Delhi, who was stretched to the 18th by Colombo's Shaylanika De Dilva, the top seeds had no trouble in reaching the semi-final stage of the competition.

Nineteen-year-old Anjali struggled at the outset, finding herself two down at the turn.

But her game began to pick up thereafter, buoyed by two birdies before she was one up going to the 18th where she clinched the issue.

Two up at the turn, holder Vandana Agarwal of Calcutta was always in command in her match against Delhi's Shalini Malik. There was a trace of complacency in her play but that did not prove fatal. Vandana eventually won won the tie 3 and 2.

As expected, theclash between fourth seed and five˙time champion Nonita Lall-Quereshi of Delhi and fifth seed and 1996 champion Urvashi Sethi-Sodhi went neck and neck.

With little separating them, Nonita one up as they approached 17th, where Nonita scored to win two and one.

Renuka Philip of Calcutta put up a better show against Chandigarh girl Parnita Garewal, who was two up after nine holes. Though Parnita, the favourite to win the title, seemed to be a little casual in her approach, she maintained her grip and won the match.

The closest match in the Vikramaditya˙Trophy event for the Bronze Division was between Situ Puri (Pune) and Tara Halwasya (Calcutta).

Situ Puri was a lucky one-up winner after being one down going to the 17th where Tara blundered while trying to clinch the match at that hole.

In another quarter-final contest, Lolly Kamat, after being two up at the turn against Mohini Chaudhury, lost two and one.

Mohini will now meet Nobusko Soft of Japan, victor over Aruna Sharma, 7 and 5.

In the othersemi-final, Situ Puri will meet Pettam Valy, who scored over Malaysian Rani Rajgopal, 3 and 2. In the stableform competition for those eliminated in the earlier rounds, Sonia D Singh (Chennai) beat Sonal Singh on account of a better score on the back nine after both had collected 36 points each.
