  From Jinnah to the mullah
In the aftermath of Independence, there were many contested visions of nationhood and alternative frameworks for its realisation. Yet, the first decade of Jawaharlal Nehru's government stands in contrast to developments in neighbouring Pakistan. In 1947 India went on to consolidate itself as a democracy; the Constituent Assembly adopted a constitution which came into force on January 26, 1950.
Clipping the PESB's wings, UF style
While the United Front (UF) government has come in for a lot of flak for its recent decision to clip the Disinvestment Commission's wings, what is not so well-known is that it is trying to do much the same with the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) which is in charge of selecting candidates for public enterprises across the country.

Moral responsibility
Are Governors well placed to judge criminal matters? The question comes sharply into focus with the latest developments in the LOC scandal in Assam. It was obviously a tough decision for Governor S K Sinha to make on the CBI's case against Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. His reason for rejecting the plea for prosecution of the Assam Chief Minister is the lack of prima facie evidence of criminal culpability.
Here we go again
With monotonous regularity, the Election Commission has been delivering ill-advised and illiberal orders that form no part of its job, make a busybody of it, and in any case make little sense. In its latest such act, this one a misguided attempt at electoral egalitarianism, the Commission has declared TV advertising by political parties for the elections a no-no.

The case for rebellion
Our schools, colleges and universities have become vast robot factories. In schools, grades are given for the ability of a child to adjust to group activities, for whether he is liked, for whether he enjoys the subjects taught. Today's generation is almost a caricature of conformism. Through all means are we prepared to renounce protest, forgo revolt, be passive.
Konkan on the fast track
As the Karwar-bound diesel multiple unit (DMU) train leaves Ratnagiri station early in the morning, the villages along the tracks begin to come to life. On January 26, the coastal belt of Western India woke up to realise that what it thought was a dream was, in fact, the reality. The 760-km railway line now does not have any missing link. The Konkan Railways, a dream project of the entire Western India, was finally ready for the people.
