Rush of Ram as Advani begins UP poll drive from Faizabad
Barely 7 km from the site where the Babri Masjid once stood, to slogans of Jai Sri Ram, BJP President L K Advani began his election campaign in Uttar Pradesh yesterday. The moderate turnout at the venue gave Advani a warm response with many cheers and pro-temple slogans being raised. Advani, in his speech, also urged Sonia Gandhi to reveal the names of the people involved in the Bofors scam.

Assam may have two phase poll
Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta yesterday said that he had convinced the Election Commission to consider holding the Lok Sabha polls in Assam in two phases. The move comes in the wake of the fact that Assam has only one-tenth of the required 678 military companies at its disposal. Mahanta claimed that a deferred schedule would allow the Government to make optimum use of the military to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.

JD against Ayodhya temple
The Janata Dal in Karnataka yesterday assured the Muslim population that it was totally opposed to the construction of the Ram temple at Ayodhya in a meet of Muslim leaders in Bangalore. Speaking at the same forum, the BJP's Karnataka unit said that the party would take steps to build the temple only after getting the approval of the minority communities. The JD spokesperson, however, stressed on the need for a permanent solution to the Ayodhya issue.

Poll "eve" talk fails to register any results
Despite 1997 witnessing heated debates on the issue of reservation for women in Parliament, major political parties have fielded just four women candidates for 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The irony is most evident in the case of the AIADMK, which is led by a woman -- J Jayalalitha. The AIADMK, in its election manifesto, has promised a lot of sops for women but it has still fielded only woman for the polls.

Safety of Sonia, kin worries Home ministry
Sonia Gandhi's entry into the political scene in India may have infused fresh life into the Congress and sent a note of caution to rival political parties. But Sonia's political foray has apparently set alarm bells ringing in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs also. The Ministry is reportedly taking the security of Sonia her children, Priyanka and Rahul, very seriously and has also briefed Sonia to follow instructions carefully.

BJP will disintegrate country: Antony
Congress Working Committee (CWC) member A K Antony has urged the electorate to refrain from voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. Speaking in an interview with The Indian Express, Antony said that the ascent of the BJP to power would demolish the secular structure of the country. Antony further said that the Congress was the only credible party, given the dissension within the United Front.
