BJP dares Sonia for debate

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, Feb 8: The BJP challenged Sonia Gandhi on Saturday to come forward for a debate on any national issue. Party general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu said Sonia was noncommittal on national issues and was carrying out a ``hit and run'' campaign and none of the senior Congress leaders were in a position to carry any conviction with the people on any issue. and, therefore, had turned to Sonia Gandhi, who had been a foreigner for 40 of her 53 years, to campaign for the party. While the Congress was sinking, the United Front (UF) was in total disarray, Naidu said, pointing out that its constituent Left parties had started praising Sonia.

This showed that these parties had no ideology and were now again dreaming of coming to power along with the non-BJP parties, he added. There was a mild flutter at the BJP briefing here on Saturday afternoon when some members belonging to an organisation, ``Janhit Research Centre'', distributed a cyclostyled statement critical of Sonia Gandhi and comparing her withImelda Marcos of the Philippines.

Just as the party's daily briefing was nearing its end, the convenor of the Centre, who was sitting among the newsmen, suddenly got up from his seat and began distributing the statement and questioning the BJP leader on what stand the party was taking against Sonia Gandhi. A visibly agitated Naidu asked him to leave the room and talk to the newsmen separately.
