BJP dares Sonia for debate
The BJP challenged Sonia Gandhi at the party's daily meeting on February 7, to come forward for a debate on any national issue. It said that Sonia was noncommittal on national issues and was carrying out a "hit and run" campaign and none of the senior Congress leaders were in a position to carry any conviction with the people on any issue.

Lok Shakti pledges open market policy
The Lok Shakti, headed by Ramakrishna Hegde, unveiled its manifesto on February 8, with a pledge to developing India as a great economic power through selective open market policy. The manifesto expresses its commitment to self-reliance, and globalisation which will provide appropriate technology and investment without hurting indigenous skills and compromising self-respect.

Over 250 dead in fresh Afghan earthquake
Some 250 people were killed and 50 others injured in an aftershock that hit the same area of northern Afghanistan on February 8 where thousands may have died in a mid-week earthquake. The aftershock was concentrated on the remote Rustaq district where the initial disaster had struck. The total death toll is estimated to be about 4,400.

Inflation rises to 5.81%
The annual rate of inflation climbed up marginally by 0.03 percentage point to 5.81% for the week ended January 24, despite a slight improvement in the prices of food articles. Based on the wholesale price index (WPI), the inflation rose to 5.81% (provisional) compared to 5.78% (P) the week before and 7.53% in the corresponding week of 1997.
