  Davenport stuns Hingis for title
Lindsay Davenport of the United States, the world's No. 2 tennis player, beat top-ranked Martina Hingis of Switzerland 6-3, 6-3, to bag the Toray Pan Pacific Open title. Davenport served well and attacked on Hingis' second serve, breaking for 4-3 and again in the ninth game in the first set. The latter who began impressive sharpshooting, broke at love for 2-3 in the second set.
  Gilchrist spurs Aussies
A blazing century from Adam Gilchrist steered Australia to an easy seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the limited-overs cricket match at Lancaster Park. Chasing New Zealand's 212-7 from 50 overs, the former won the day-night fixture by seven wickets off just 38.2 overs with Gilchrist making 118 from 117 deliveries, including 10 fours and five sixes.

Bhupathi wins first qualifier
Indian tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi had an easy victory in the first qualifier at the $ 1 million Dubai tennis Open at Dubai, beating American Jim Grabb 6-2, 7-6. Bhupathi has to win two more qualifying matches before making it to the singles main draw. He plays Belgian Fernon Wibier in the second qualifier.
Raichand, Thakur claim golf title
There was a close battle for supremacy before Capt V Raichand (13) and C D E Thakur (14) emerged victorious in the Digjam Golf Tournament, a better-ball Stableford event held at the United Services Club Course. The pair collected 45 points, 25 on the way back with the help of five nett birdies and one net eagle.

Parnita tames Nonita to win title
Youth prevailed over experience in the final of the ABN-AMRO Bank and Kores India-sponsored All-India Ladies Golf Championships. The seventeen year old Parnita Garewal, of Chandigarh, won the 36-hole match-play competition against five-time former champion, 37-year-old Nonita Lall-Quereshi, of Delhi, 4 and 3.
Biharis stumped by Azza's outrage
Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin stirred a hornet's nest by allegedly making a derogatory remark against `Biharis' whom he reportedly called "thieves". Azhar's public outburst followed the theft of his cap as he was returning to pavilion with his bat under one arm and a yellow cap under the other, when he was mobbed by a group of autograph hunters.
