WASHINGTON, February 20: Pakistan is developing a 1,500 km-range missile called ``Ghauri,'' according to a Congressional Research Service (CRS) document. The document quoted Gordon Oehler, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency's non-proliferation centre, as having ``confirmed'' this development on November 19, 1997. Oehler also confirmed that Pakistan has Chinese-built M-11 missiles, to be built in Pakistan with Chinese help. The document is part of a paper, ``China's compliance with international arms control agreements'' by Shirley A Kan, foreign affairs analyst in CRS' Foreign Affairs and National Defence division. The paper said some analysts suspect Chinese or North Korean assistance to Pakistan for building the Ghauri in Pakistan. ``China is building a nuclear power reactor at Chashma and exporting heavy water to the safeguarded Kanupp reactor,'' the document added.
``In the past, despite its commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, China provided unsafeguarded assistance. OnFebruary 5, 1996, The Washington Times first disclosed intelligence reports that the China National Nuclear Corporation, a state-owned corporation, transferred to the A Q Khan Research Laboratory in Kahuta, Pakistan, 5,000 ring magnets, which can be used in gas centrifuges to enrich uranium,'' the paper said.
