World number three Pat Rafter fended off a first set comeback by French Cedric Pioline to advance to the quarter-finals of the European Community Tennis Championship. The second seeded Australian raced into a 5-0 lead but allowed Pioline to take the next four games before claiming the set 6-4.
  Kiwis on song after early hiccups
New Zealand were on course for a big first innings lead over Zimbabwe by stumps on the second day of the first cricket Test at Wellington yesterday. The home side were 176 for the loss of three wickets, just four runs shy of Zimbabwe's paltry first innings total of 180, and well set on a good batting wicket.

India thrashed Pacific Oceania 2-0 today after beating Tajikistan 2-1 to win both their matches in Pool A after the teams were re-arranged into three pools.

Salgaocar continue surge
Federation Cup champion Salgaocar defeated bottom-placed Mahindra and Mahindra of Mumbai 3-1 to move into the second spot of the Philips National League at the Nehru Stadium. Salgaocar, who dominated the first 20 minutes of first-half, surged ahead in the fourth minute through Robert Fernandes.
Warne concerned about shoulder
Leg-spinner Shane Warne admitted yesterday that he remained troubled by his bowling shoulder as the Australian team left Sydney for a three-Test cricket series in India. Warne missed this month's four limited-over internationals in New Zealand to have treatment on the right shoulder following another gruelling domestic season against New Zealand and South Africa.
