  President seeks legal advice, awaits ruling
The battle over Uttar Pradesh has shifted to Delhi with Rashtrapati Bhavan once again becoming the epicentre of political activity after Governor Romesh Bhandari created another constitutional crisis by sacking the Kalyan Singh government. President K R Narayanan has, however, deferred a decision, preferring to wait for the verdict of the Allahabad High Court which will hear a petition challenging Bhandari's decision today.
  Second phase: 55% voting, nine deaths
The second phase of elections yesterday witnessed a turnout of at least 55%. The elections, held in 183 constituencies in nine states and the union territory of Pondhichery, were also less violent than the first phase held on February 16. Violence was still evident with at least nine persons being killed and many injured in incidents of bomb blasts, shoot-outs and booth-capturing.

BJP demands Bhandari's ouster
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked for the immediate ouster of Romesh Bhandari from the chair of the governor of Uttar Pradesh. BJP's allies too joined in by voicing their protest against the Governor's hasty decision.
13 MLAs ditch Pal, back Kalyan
The Constitutional crisis in Uttar Pradesh deepened further yesterday. 12 MLAs from the the Jagdambika Pal Ministry announced their support for deposed chief minister Kalyan Singh yesterday. One Loktantrik Congress minister, Vivek Singh, also tendered his resignation from the new ministry.

Sonia vows to salvage secularism in Sena backyard
The Congress Party's star campaigner, Sonia Gandhi, yesterday cocked a snook at the Shiv Sena in its own backyard. Sonia, who spoke at a rally in Mumbai, squarely blamed the Shiv Sena for for the communal riots of 1992-93. She further added that the Shiv Sena stood only for exploitation, destruction, communalism and terrorism.
Rebellion brewing in TDP, says senior Congress leader
Senior Congress leader Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy has claimed that the ruling Telugu Desam Party MLAs will revolt against Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu after the Lok Sabha elections. Reddy claimed that the TDP MLAs were disgusted with Naidu's allegedly "dirty" politics. He, however, refused to divulge how many MLAs were prepared to leave the TDP.
