MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 25: St Stanislaus scored a thrilling last-minute goal victory over St Andrew's in the semi-finals of the boys' under-10 Schools Oliver Andrade Cup hockey tournament, sponsored by Thums-up and conducted by MSSA, at the St Stanislaus ground, today.In the other semi-final, Don Bosco (Matunga) pipped St Joseph's (Malad) 2-1.The Stanislaus-Andrew's match was evenly contested. Andrew's were up in attack in the first 10 minutes of the match and Gagan Datta missed three gilt-edged chances of putting them ahead.
However, as the game progressed, Stanislaus started exerting pressure and the Andrew's goal had a few close calls. After the interval, the game kept swinging from end to end but a goal eluded both teams.
In the dying minute, a weak clearance by Shiraj Khan from the Andrew's defence was collected by a Stanislaus forward who pushed the ball towards the right-wing where Craig Pereira took a try only to be saved by Andrew's goalkeeper Saad Patanwalla. However, off the rebound and from amelee that ensued, Joel Saldanha pushed home to give Stanislaus the lead, which eventually turned out to be the match-winner.
In the second semi-final, Don Bosco held the upperhand for most part of the game and were awarded a `stroke' in the very first minute for a stick-check. Appachu Codanda confidently scored to put Don Bosco a goal up.
Don Bosco consolidated their position nine minutes later through a field goal by Erlin Saldanha.
St Joseph's pulled one back in the first minute after the interval through Ashutosh Pai. Thereafter, they were all over the Bosco territory but a goal eluded them.
GMP A triumph
Greater Mumbai Police A defeated Companeroes 2-0 in the Don Bosco Football Challenge Cup for seniors, organised by the Don Bosco Youth Centre, and played at the St Joseph's ITI ground, Kurla, today.
Companeroes dominated the proceedings for the first 16 minutes but their forwards were off the mark.
A good move between the Police forwards saw Uday Gade pass to Laxman Thakur and thelatter took a powerful shot from the top of the box which beat Companeroes goalkeeper Brian hands down. The goal came in the 13th minute and GMP led 1-0 at the interval.
In the second-half, the Police players combined well and in the 55th minute a misunderstanding between Companeroes' defenders saw Uday Gade beating the Companeroes goalkeeper Brian with a neat placement for the cops' second goal.
With this victory, GMP enter the quarter-finals.
In the juniors' encounter, Fatim (Khar) drubbed St Francis Xavier B 6-1 after leading 3-0 at the breather.
Shayam Chavan (2), Noel Raj, Vinod Patel, Melvin Fernandes and Babu Acharya scored for the winners, while Asif netted a consolation goal for the losers.Merwyn nets winner
A lone goal by Merwyn Mendonca turned out to be the match-winner for Kalina Recreation against Ryan Augustine in the Western India Football Association Division II League at the Cooperage, today.
Results: Division II: Rallis 1 (Neil 1) drew with United 1 (EdgarPereira 1); Navi Mumbai 0 drew with Madanpura 0.
Division III: Our Lady of Perpetual Succour 1 (Suresh K 1) bt Fatima Boys 0; Chemburites 2 (Sunil Pereira 1, Vaibhav Gawle 1) drew with Blue Angels 2 (Amit 1, Daniel 1).
SAI have it easy
Sports Authority of India (SAI), Kandivli, routed Marinagar 3-0 in the Bombay Hockey Association Division I League at the Mahindra Stadium, today.Gurmeet Rao (2) and Sagar Thakur were the goal-getters.

Awate wins tourney
Avinash Awate (Elo 2280) was unbeaten in the open category of the Open Rapid Chess tournament at the St Pius College, Aarey Road on Sunday.
Awate won all his matches except against Girish Chandnani which ended in a draw. Ravi Bhave(Elo 2200) scored six out of a possible seven took the second spot.
