Merchant in second round

MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 25: Yasin Merchant wins comfortably against A Malusute in the first round of Anthony D 'Cruz open handicap Snooker tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana today. He got useful breaks of 35, 26, 24 and 35.

In the other first round matches, Romeo Fernandes (+60) defeated V Tambe (+45) 106-101, 110-96. Homi GOdrej (+50) got passed Timothy D'SOuza (+60) 112-88, 110-76 and P Mhatre (+60) took three sets to outclass S Rassiwala (+60) with a score of 111-77, 102-110, 104-76.

Sonawane wins

Rajesh Sonawane won his tough encounter against Riyaz Mohamood 9-5, 6-9, 9-7, 9-10, 9-2 in the professionals event of the Motilal Sanghi memorial inter-club squash championships at the Otters Club today.

In the other two matches, Prakash Yelve defeated Sunil Verma 9-7, 9-7, 8-10, 9-5 and Ramesh More put out Santosh Tambe 9-6, 9-5, 9-6.

Vikas Jangra advanced to the third round after two consecutive wins over R Vora and R Shah. In the girls under-19 event being played at the Willington Sports Club, RheaBhandhari did not concede a single point to Tina Mehta. Parneeta Chowdhary sailed past Swapna Jalan 9-4, 9-0, 9-7 in the women category.

Balmohan enter final

Shardarshan Vidyamandir lost to Balmohan Vidyamandir, Dadar in the second semi-finals of the Frosties inter-school cricket Super Cup played at the Bombay Gymkhana. Shardarshan batted first and scored 179 for 9 in the allotted 45 overs. Balmohan surpassed the total in 34 overs at the loss of three wickets only. The partnership of 97 runs in 123 balls between Harshad Rawle and Kiran Mayekar was instrumental in Balmohan win. Kiran scored 53 in 84 balls with six hits to boundary. Harshad scored unbeaten 71 in 90 balls with eleven hits to the ropes. For Shardarshan, Onkar Khanwikar scored 60 runs with six boundaries. Nilesh Modi 20 and Chinmai Madiya 36 were the other main contributors

Amol Jadhav took three for 43 and Harshad scalped two for 53.

Harshad won the Man-of-the -Match award for his all-round performance.
