BANGKOK, February 27: The ailing economy is not the only thing that has Thais from all walks of life worried about the future. Many Thais are preparing for the end of the world following reports highlighting predictions by 16th century French astrologer Nostradamus, The Nation said today.The Bangkok paper said Thais had been spooked by predictions that the world will end in the year 2,000, especially after a popular talk show called Tee-Sip, or Ten pm, highlighted the prediction.
Despite efforts by translator Charoesn Vatanasin, who put together the Thai version of Nostradamus' work, to calm fears and downplay the predictions, many still remain convinced of an imminent Armageddon.
``Self-reliance is the only way to help my family survive when civilisation is obliterated,'' said Suparat Lertsuwanawong, who has built a fallout shelter just north of the capital.
A music industry executive, said he believed the predictions, and planned not to have children.
