Bail after two years in jail

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
February 27: Additional Sessions Judge Laxmi Tonsekar today granted bail to Santosh Kisan Dewkar, accused of robbing Rs 22 from a taxi driver in 1992. Dewkar had engaged a cab at Ambedkar Road, Dadar. He told the driver Kanhaiyalal Yadav to stop near Worli.

He brandished a revolver and relieved Yadav of Rs 22. However, other cabbies came to Yadav's rescue and Dewkar was nabbed.. It was later found that his revolver was only a toy one. The metropolitan magistrate of Dadar had granted him bail but Dewkar jumped bail and was absconding. He was re-arrested after six months and since then he remained in jail. Special police prosecutor P P Mishra opposed for bail. But, defence counsel Sanjay Sawant argued that Dewkar had spent two years and three months in custody and if awarded conviction by the court would have spent more than half his sentence in jail.
