  Pawar, Karunakaran trying to woo saffron allies
Senior Congress leaders Sharad Pawar and K Karunakaran yesterday launched an offensive to divide the BJP camp by trying to woo the saffron allies. Their targets included Jayalalitha and Om Prakash Chautala with whom they established contact.
  CWC ropes in Sonia to hang Kesri
Moves to oust Sitaram Kesri from the Congress presidency took a formal note yesterday when the Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution practically asking Sonia Gandhi to take control of the organisation and select the CPP leader to ensure "total unity" in the party. The resolution is believed to be the result of hectic lobbying by the Sharad Pawar camp to change the leadership as a prelude to its efforts to form the government.

Sanjay Singh-Garima divorce illegal: SC
The Supreme Court has held as illegal the divorce granted by a trial court to newly-elected BJP MP Sanjay Singh and his first wife Garima Singh in 1995, upholding an Allahabad High Court verdict that the decree was obtained by "fraud and collusion" between the two parties.
Goa at Centre's mercy for tax-holiday extension
The government of Goa has been lobbying with the Centre for the extension of tax-holiday status for the State by at least another five years. The five-year tax-holiday which was granted to Goa by the Narasimha Rao government comes to an end on March 31, this year.
