  Give me a Naidu
He stands there, maintaining `equidistance' from desperate suitors, but always closer to the camera -- and, unreportedly, his conscience. The most sought after Chandrababu Naidu can afford to stand serene despite an overplay of seduction. It's a freedom he has achieved by good governance and grassroots politics. This freedom allows him to play the part of federal big daddy, to make a choice that can be a stable factor in a fractured polity.
  The greening of Tamil Nadu
The green revolution has moved south to Tamil Nadu. And the ones who are reaping the benefits now are textile barons and the textile shop owners. There are several reports concerning where it all started. According to one, the head of a religious mutt had warned the people that this year would prove disastrous for men. It would be a cruel way to correct the male-female ratio, but he is supposed to have said that many men might die in natural calamities and accidents.

Letter from Chennai
The Bharatiya Janata Party could not have imagined even in its wildest dream that its ally in Tamil Nadu would prove such a hard nut to crack. Very few will believe that the letter drama enacted by AIADMK chief Jayalalitha had little to do with the probable distribution of Central portfolios. The AIADMK may remain out of a BJP-headed coalition but that hardly means that she is content with the role of a king-maker and does not claim the right to be as much of a minister-maker at the Centre as rival Muthuvel Karunanidhi was during the brief days of UF rule.
A bellicose comeback
In his deep desire to make Hindus learn something worthwhile from Islam, a general secretary of the BJP has declared that his party shall include in the proposed common civil code the Islamic practice of formally seeking the woman's consent for her marriage. The Hindu marriage ritual, he said, does not have such a provision and as an example of taking good things from all religions, this was his ready reference. As election eve is the only time for our legislators to think about religion, what else is to be expected?

Flying apart without political will
It was indeed merciful of the board of Air India and Indian Airlines to have decided when it met in Calcutta last week to refer the issue of the merger of the two airlines to a consultancy firm for preparing a concept paper before May. Given the Indian penchant for procrastination, it will take decades before something comes out of this exercise. The interregnum will see many changes, political and administrative.
