Bombay Mercantile emerge champions

March 13: Bombay Mercantile Co-operative Bank Sports Club defeated Mumbai Police B by an innings and 50 runs in the Times Shield D Division cricket final at the Elf-Vengsarkar Academy grounds today.

The policemen, who were 123 for five at close on Thursday while needing 326 to avoid innings defeat, crumbled for 276. H Bagul staged a valiant battle and was left stranded at 99 when he ran out of partners.

While R Guzer (62) gave him company and No 10 batsman S Kadam (25) hung on for sometime, the sustained Mercantile attack showed no mercy and wrapped up the innings at 276.

Aslam Sarguru, with a century in the first innings, finished with match figures of 6-94 to hasten the Mumbai Police innings' demise.

After declaring at 540-7, Mercantile dismissed Police for 184 (plus 30 penalty runs) to enforce a follow-on. D Sudrik top-scored with 71.Brief scores: Bombay Mercantile 540-6 declared in 183 overs (Aslam Sarguru 162 n.o., Tajammul Khan 138, Mileen Vasudeo 99, Sameer Bandekar 54; Sanjay Kadam 3-140) vsMumbai Police B 214 in 54.1 overs (D Sudrik 71; Aslam Sarguru 4-37) and 276 in 77.1 overs (H Bagul 99 not out, R Guzer 62; Aslam Sarguru 2-57, M Mulla 2-57, M Sayed 3-64), A Gawte 2-38)

Result: Bombay Mercantile won by an innings and 50 runs
