Indian shipping vessels to deal directly with EU

Prema Vishwanathan
SINGAPORE, March 13: Indian and Chinese shipping companies will henceforth have to negotiate all bilateral maritime agreements with their European counterparts through the European Union (EU) and not with the individual member countries. The mandate, which has been granted to EU for the first time ever, is apparently aimed at ironing out some of the problems encountered by European shipping firms while operating in India and China.

The Business Times daily of Singapore quoted an EU spokesman as saying the body had been requested to draw up fresh deals with India and China and that any new agreement would serve as a benchmark for future negotiations with the Third World. According to a Lloyd's List report, European transport commissioner Neil Kinnock has been asked to conduct the negotiations on behalf of the European Union.
