Rain washes out play

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CALCUTTA, March 13: The entire first day's play of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League group-B match between hosts Bengal and Uttar Pradesh was washed out due to soggy ground condition at the CCFC ground here today.

Heavy overnight rain had left the ground soggy and a few wet patches close to the pitch forced the umpires to call off the day's play at 1400 hours.

The two umpires R Parthasarathi of Chennai and K G Laxminarayan of Hyderabad inspected the ground conditions a few times before taking the decision to abandon the first day's play.

With rains lashing the city in the afternoon, chances of play beginning tomorrow also look quite bleak.

Both Bengal and Uttar Pradesh have five points to their credit and even a draw would take them to the quarter final stage of the championship.

Maharashtra, the other team in the group, have six points from two matches.
