  HC pulls up Jaya for engineering scam in granite lease
The Madras High Court has censured the former AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu led by Jayalalitha for causing the state a loss of Rs 80 crore in the grant of lease for black granite quarrying by violating tender norms. Dismissing a petition Justice A Ramamurthy observed that the records indicated that the entire fraud had taken place with the full knowledge and involvement of the then industries minister.

China tried to sell N-arms again: US
The Clinton administration has uncovered new evidence that China tried to sell nuclear equipment with weapons applications to Pakistan and Iran within the past several weeks. The disclosure comes as the White House signaled that Clinton will move up the timetable for a summit in Beijing from November to June in order to solidify improved ties.

New WWF scheme to protect tigers
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has launched a new compensation scheme which might help dissuade villagers from poisoning tigers as they kill livestock belonging to the villagers living around the national parks. After reports of six tigers being poisoned in the tiger reserves of Dudhwa and Corbett, the Tiger Conservation Programme of WWF offered a compensation package.

Pakistan's letter to the United Nations repeating its unsubstantiated allegation that India was involved in cross-border terrorism, a charge firmly refuted by India, has drawn little attention here with most diplomats, including those from Islamic countries, dimissing it as a mere propaganda.
